Whole-house or essential circuits?
Essential circuits covers refrigeration, the well pump, some lighting, outlets, and often one AC zone, at a much lower cost. Whole-house runs everything and costs accordingly. Most Polk County homes we do land on a well-chosen essentials package with one or two AC zones.
Can I just use a portable generator?
You can, if it is connected through a proper interlock or manual transfer switch. What you must never do is backfeed through a dryer outlet, which energises the utility line and can kill a line worker. We install code-compliant interlocks for portable units.
How often does it need servicing?
Standby units run a self-test weekly and need an annual service: oil, filters, plugs, battery, and a load test. In Florida the battery and the load test are the two that matter most, because a generator that will not crank in September is worthless.
Do you install commercial standby systems?

How much will it cost to install my home standby generator?
It is set first by what you want kept running, which sizes the unit, and then by the transfer switch type, the distance from the meter and the panel, the gas line or propane tank work, the pad and clearances, and the permit and inspection. Published Florida cost guides quote wide installed ranges, and those are general market figures rather than our price. We do the load calculation first, then give you the number.
Where will my generator be installed?
Outside, on a level pad, close enough to the meter and the panel to keep the runs sensible, and positioned to meet the clearance rules from windows, doors, vents, and the property line. Exhaust direction and noise matter too, so we avoid pointing it at a bedroom window or a neighbour patio where we can. In Florida we also think about flood level and about keeping it clear of trees that come down in a storm.
Does a generator add value to my Florida home?
Buyers here understand what a week without power means, so a properly installed standby system with documentation is a genuine selling point in a way it would not be in a milder climate. It will not usually show as a matching figure on an appraisal. The stronger argument is what it saves you while you own the house: spoiled food, a failed well pump, and a house that becomes uninhabitable at ninety degrees.

A standby unit is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, starts itself when the utility drops, and transfers the load through an automatic transfer switch with nobody home. A portable unit has to be fetched, fuelled, started by hand, connected through an interlock or manual transfer switch, and refuelled every several hours. Portables cost far less and are a reasonable choice for essentials. What neither should ever do is backfeed through a dryer outlet.
Can I get financing for a generator installation?
We are electricians, not a lender, and we do not run a financing programme of our own. Generator manufacturers and third party lenders periodically offer installation financing, and a credit union or a home equity line is often cheaper than either. Tell us at the estimate that financing matters to you and we will tell you plainly what is available through the equipment side and what is not.
How can I prepare to meet with my local dealer?
Three things make the visit useful. Decide roughly what has to stay on in an outage, whether that is the whole house or refrigeration, the well pump, some lighting, and an AC zone.
