Common Questions

Residential Electrical FAQs

Do you work on older homes?

Constantly. Lake Wales, Bartow, and Frostproof have a lot of housing stock from before modern wiring practice, and we know what to expect in it: cloth-wrapped conductors, ungrounded two-prong circuits, undersized services, and fuse boxes. We can address the urgent items first and phase the rest.

Will you work with my contractor?

Yes. We regularly handle the electrical scope on remodels and additions alongside a general contractor, and we coordinate rough-in and trim to their schedule.

Do you charge for an estimate?

For straightforward installation work we can usually quote from a site visit at no charge. Diagnostic troubleshooting is different, because finding the fault is the actual work. We tell you which applies before we schedule.

How do I know whether my panel can handle what I want to add?

A load calculation answers it. We look at the service size, the existing loads, and what you are adding, then tell you plainly whether it fits or whether the panel needs to come first. We would rather tell you that upfront than halfway through.

How much does an electrician cost in 2026?

Published national guides such as HomeAdvisor put licensed electrician labour somewhere in the region of 50 to 130 dollars an hour, with a higher first hour to cover the service call. That is a national figure and not our price. What actually drives the number on your job is the scope, how accessible the work is, whether the panel has capacity, the length of any new runs, and whether a permit and inspection are required. We assess the job, then give you the price before we start.

What does a residential electrician do?

Everything on the load side of your meter and a fair amount on the supply side of it. That means service and panel work, branch circuits, outlets and switches, lighting, fans, appliance and HVAC circuits, generators, EV chargers, rewiring, and the diagnostics that find out why something is misbehaving. A licensed residential electrician is also the person who pulls the permit and gets the work inspected, which is what keeps your insurance and your resale clean.

How often should an electrician look at my electrical system?

For a home under twenty years old with no symptoms, every ten years or so is reasonable. For a home over forty years old, or one with a fuse box, aluminium branch wiring, or a panel that has never been opened, every three to five years makes more sense. Beyond that, have it looked at when you buy the house, before a major addition, and after any storm that damaged the service.

What should I verify before hiring an electrician?

Ask for the state licence number and check it, ask whether they carry liability and workers compensation cover, and ask who pulls the permit. Ask whether the people doing the work are employees or subcontractors, and whether you get the price in writing before work begins. Kincaid holds Florida Master Electrical Licence EC0000873 and has been operating in Polk County since 1973, so all of that is straightforward to verify.

Is it safe to perform electrical work myself?

Changing a bulb or resetting a breaker, yes. Beyond that we would rather you did not, and not only for the obvious reason. Unpermitted work by an unlicensed party can void a homeowners policy and it turns up on inspection reports at closing. The common mistakes, such as back-stabbed devices, missing grounds, and overloaded circuits, fail quietly inside a wall rather than tripping anything.

How does bundling multiple electrical projects help reduce costs?

A large part of any job is getting there, setting up, opening things up, and pulling a permit. Doing the ceiling fans, the outlet you have wanted for two years, and the exterior light on one visit spreads that fixed portion across more work. Sequencing helps too: if a panel upgrade is coming, the circuits that depend on it should be planned at the same time rather than run twice.
